Why schools standardized on Chromebooks
Cost is the biggest reason. A Chromebook typically runs a fraction of the price of a comparable Windows laptop or MacBook, which matters when a district is buying one device per student. They're also simple to manage at scale: IT staff can push updates, install apps, and lock down settings for thousands of devices at once through a central admin console, instead of configuring each one by hand. Battery life is usually 8-12 hours, enough for a full school day without a charger, and there's very little to maintain since there's no traditional operating system to patch or antivirus to run.
What Chromebooks can and can't do
ChromeOS is built around the browser. It runs web apps natively and, on most models, Android apps from the Play Store. What it doesn't do is run traditional desktop software the way Windows or macOS does - no installing a downloaded .exe, no full Adobe Creative Suite, no most PC games. In a typical school-managed deployment, students can't install outside apps at all; the admin controls what's available. That's a real limitation, but it's also the tradeoff that keeps the devices cheap, fast, and hard to break.
Why this makes browser-based tools essential
If a calculator, a citation generator, or a study planner requires installing software, it simply doesn't work for a huge share of students. A tool that runs entirely in the browser works the instant you load the page, on the exact same device the school already gave you. This is why browser-based tools aren't just a convenience anymore, they're often the only option a student on a school-managed Chromebook actually has.
What to look for in browser-based school tools
A few things separate a genuinely useful browser tool from a frustrating one. It should load fast, even on a school's shared, sometimes-congested Wi-Fi. It should keep working, or at least not lose your data, if the connection drops mid-class. And it shouldn't demand an account signup just to do something simple like convert a unit or check a word count - creating friction for a one-time task pushes students toward whatever loads fastest, account or not.
How this shifts homework and classwork
Because everything routes through the browser, students end up working across a handful of tabs instead of separate installed programs: a document, a research tab, a calculator, maybe a citation tool. That changes what "good" software looks like for a student - it's not about a polished desktop app anymore, it's about a page that opens instantly, does one job well, and gets out of the way so you can get back to the actual assignment.
The same logic applies at home
Even students without a school-issued Chromebook feel this shift, since the same browser-first habits carry over to phones, tablets, and shared family computers where installing software isn't always practical either. A homework tool that only works on one specific operating system quietly locks out anyone using a different device that day. Building around the browser instead of a particular platform means the same tool works whether you're on a school Chromebook during class or a personal laptop finishing the assignment at home that night.
