What Is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode made up of a grid of small black and white squares called modules. Unlike a traditional barcode, which only stores information in one direction, a QR code stores data both horizontally and vertically, which lets it pack in far more information, like a full web address, in a small amount of space. A phone or scanner camera reads the pattern of modules and decodes it back into the original text or link almost instantly.

QR codes include built-in error correction, meaning the code can still be scanned successfully even if part of it is smudged, torn, or partially covered by a logo. The three squares in the corners of every QR code help a scanner figure out the code's orientation, so it reads correctly no matter what angle the phone is held at. Tips for a QR Code That Actually Scans

Keep enough contrast between the code and its background, black on white works best, and avoid printing it on a busy or colored background. Leave a clear quiet zone (blank margin) around all four sides of the code so scanners can detect its edges. When printing on a poster, make sure the code is large enough to scan from the distance people will actually stand, a good rule of thumb is roughly one inch of code size for every ten feet of scanning distance. Always test your QR code with your own phone before printing or presenting.
